The nonexempt of Byron's The Vision of Judgment is to some extent piece of writing and to some extent political, but its spring was Byron's disgust of Cant and pretence.
On the annihilation of King George III, old, mad, and blind, in 1820, the Poet Laureate Robert Southey create a praising literary composition. Written in unrhymed hexameter, its attempts at self-respect achieved no more than a stock ostentatiousness. But far worsened was its pretense and smarmy pitch. Entitled "The Vision of Judgment" it showed George III's triumphal entryway into the computer scientist of heaven and the denouncement of his enemies. To Byron, the brazen compliment of a King, who was at prizewinning second-rate and at bottom tyrannical, was exceptionally distasteful.
